Manchester United could already have the answer to their biggest problem

The new season was supposed to bring fresh beginnings. Instead, it has felt like more of the same for Manchester United.

Over the first two matches of the new campaign, there has been a familiar feeling to the way in which Erik ten Hag's side has been carved open at the back and the number of chances they have squandered at the other end.

If not for some dreadful officiating against Wolves, they could well be winless across their opening two matches, and there is no guarantee of an upturn in fortunes with Nottingham Forest and Arsenal still to come before the international break.

Things might not be as desperate as they seem, though. While hangover symptoms from last season have hampered the start of the campaign, they also lead to a remedy.

Amid all the doom and gloom that inevitably follows United's inability to win a match, Ten Hag might well point towards the obvious positives from the opening two matches of the season.

Only Brighton and Newcastle have created more big chances than United in the Premier League so far this season; the difference is that they have taken theirs.

Raphael Varane netted United's only goal from their six big chances across both matches, while Brighton have scored eight from nine and Newcastle have netted five from eight. That's a 16.66% conversion rate compared with 88.88% and 62.5%.

United also have the fifth-highest expected goals from the opening two matchdays and the fourth-highest number of shots, but they have also missed the most big chances out of any club in the top-flight.
