Ben Davies reveals the simple Rangers message from Clement that inspired shock corner role as he turns from sceptic to convert
Philippe Clement might have warned he doesn’t possess a magic wand after arriving at Rangers.
But Ben Davies reckons the new boss has a trick or two up his sleeve after turning him into a corner-taker. The defender was shocked when Clement put him on flag kick duty against Sparta Prague last week having spent a career attacking set-pieces rather than delivering them. But with Borna Barisic missing and with the boss favouring outswinging deliveries from both sides, it was down to the left-sided centre-back to take responsibility on.
And Davies said: “The manager has installed a bit more belief, individually and collectively. You can gain confidence from performances, it doesn’t happen overnight but it’s probably a bit better than it’s been. It’s a bit of an arm around the shoulder. It feels a bit more personal.
“He put me on corners, do you know what I mean? He asked if I’d done it before and I said I wasn’t sure about taking them. He said, ‘you can do it’. I didn’t expect it but I took it as a compliment. That’s what I mean about the belief and confidence."
