Steven Davis exits Rangers coaching role under Philippe Clement as Ibrox icon gets honest over injury agony

Legendary Steven Davis is unsure what his future holds over his long-term knee injury and revealed he's exiting his first-team coaching gig to focus on rehab.

The 38-year-old hasn't played for Rangers in almost a year with a serious knee problem and given the stage he's at in his career, the question has been asked over whether he will again. He's been coaching behind the scenes but a recent feature on Rangers TV revealed he has stepped away from his first team duties for the time being. Davis filled the breach left behind by Michael Beale and held the fort as interim boss until Philippe Clement's appointment and spent the first few weeks of the new boss' tenure in the backroom team.

He's left that role now to focus on his fitness but he says things aren't where he'd like them to be - raising further questions over what his future holds. In a revealing interview Davis was asked about his decision to step away from coaching for now and he said: "The manager's been great and it's been great to work alongside him for the past couple of weeks and see his ideas. Ultimately I've got a decision to make in terms of my knee.

"I'm 11 months into my rehab. The last four weeks have been a bit of a write-off because I've been doing the other role, but my knee isn't where I'd like it to be. It's imperative that I try and get that right first and foremost. I'm old in terms of playing but young in terms of life. Hopefully wherever my career takes me, whether that's coaching, managing or playing, it's key that I get my knee right.

"I'm still at a stage where I can't even play with my kids in the garden or play football with my son. It's important that I get that right."
