Belgian GP: Kevin Magnussen gives backing to Spa circuit changes

Kevin Magnussen says he likes the look of the changes that have been made to the Spa-Francorchamps circuit ahead of this year’s Belgian Grand Prix.

The world-famous Spa hosts Formula 1 once again this year, with the track a real driver and fan favourite given the challenges it throws up and the old-school nature of it.

Indeed, it’s one of the hardest tracks in the world to master, and that’s before you add the typically changeable conditions, and that’s why it’s such a thrill to watch the best drivers around take it on.

However, Spa also has seen tragedy on more than one occasion and several big crashes over the years, meaning the quest to improve safety at the circuit is never-ending.

A number of big changes have been made in the past to try and open up the circuit and move the crash barriers further away, with more tweaks being made for the 2022 event.

The run-off sections have been changed at Eau Rouge and Raidillon whilst new gravel traps have been added at other corners, in a bid to increase levels of safety, and Magnussen thinks that the changes will prove to be good thing:

“I think it’s good to have gravel instead of tarmac run-off as I feel it’s safer in some ways and it makes it easier in terms of track limits. It makes it simpler and also a little more challenging as pushing the limits will have a bigger risk, which is a good thing I think.”
