Barcelona target Joao Cancelo and other Man City transfer rumours

Barcelona want to sign Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo during the summer window - according to reports - as the Portugal international continues to face an uncertain future after spending time with Bayern Munich on loan this campaign.

Despite being a main performer over the last few years, Cancelo was allowed to join Bayern mid-season as they coincidentally prepare to meet City in the Champions League quarter-finals. But where the 28-year-old former Juventus man will be playing next term remains up for debate.

Reports indicate Bayern are not planning to trigger their option to buy. However, there is understood to be growing interest from La Liga with Spanish publication Sport claiming Barcelona manager Xavi could look to recruit Cancelo on loan when the market reopens.

Barcelona have been linked with Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and now Cancelo as they run the rule over reinforcements. Xavi is thought to be a huge admirer of the player and his versatility has been pinpointed as one key reason for them going after his signature.

Cancelo signed for City from Juventus for €65million before the 2019/2020 season. He has played 154 games for the club in all competitions since then.

Elsewhere, reports from Italian publication Calciomercato indicate Pep Guardiola has told key figures in the City boardroom to do everything they can to sign Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni as the club strive to bring in another centre-back should Aymeric Laporte depart.

Bastoni, 23, has earned rave reviews for his performances in Serie A this season. He has totted-up 150 games for Inter since joining them from Atalanta back in 2017.
