'Baffling' - Manchester United fans in disbelief after controversial Dan Gore red card vs Wrexham

Manchester United fans were left baffled by the decision to show Dan Gore a straight red card against Wrexham in the midweek pre-season friendly.

Shortly after the break, Gore went into a challenge with Andy Cannon inside his own half. On first impression, it looked to be a robust tackle if not a red card, but the referee immediately sent off the United skipper for the night.

And replays showed the challenge was arguably no more than a booking with Gore's studs grounded when he went into the tackle. At the time, the score was 2-1 in favour of Wrexham after a half with plenty of incidents.

United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop could have been sent off after 13 minutes when he clattered into the Red Dragons' star striker Paul Mullin outside the area. Despite the forward needing oxygen, the 23-year-old was only booked.

And some Reds supporters watching on believed the referee's decision not to send Bishop off caused Gore to be punished unfairly. Here is what a selection of fans had to say on Twitter.

The National League champions found themselves ahead just before the half hour mark when Elliot Lee turned home a cross from close range. Less than 10 minutes later it was two when a long throw from Ben Tozer caused havoc in the United defence, leading to Aaron Hayden heading home at the back post.

Marc Jurado scored in first half stoppage time to bring the Reds back into the game but, down to 10 men, United had an uphill challenge on their hands to avoid defeat. This was made harder with just over 20 minutes remaining when Sam Dalby made it 3-1.
