Bafana and Pirates legend John Moeti dies at 55

Legendary Bafana Bafana midfielder John Moeti, who was part of Clive Barker's triumphant squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, died on Monday after "receiving specialist medical care" for several months.

The 55-year-old was also a crucial member of the 1995 Orlando Pirates squad that claimed the CAF Champions League, becoming South Africa's first club to win the prestigious competition.

Moeti's family confirmed the former Buccaneers and SuperSport United star's passing in a statement released to City Press, News24's sister publication.

"It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John 'Dungi' Moeti," the statement read.

"John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care.

"John succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (6 February) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer.

"We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support.

"The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss, and funeral details will be advised in due course."
