Aston Villa transfer news: Matt Targett 'has no future at Villa Park'

Matt Targett has no future at Aston Villa after being allowed to leave the club on loan for the remainder of the season, according to Carlton Palmer.

Targett linked up with Premier League rivals Newcastle United on a temporary basis just hours ahead of the January transfer window slamming shut.

Targett has admitted he is keen to enjoy a successful end to the campaign after heading to Newcastle on loan.

The left-back will be hoping his influence will play a key role in the Magpies climbing out of the drop zone and maintaining their Premier League status.

His loan departure from Villa came after falling down the pecking order following Lucas Digne’s £25million switch from Everton during the transfer window.

Prior the Frenchman’s arrival at Villa Park, Targett had made 17 starts for his parent club.

But Digne has immediately made the left-back spot his own and not missed a minute of action since heading south from Goodison Park.

Palmer believes Targett’s days of being Villa’s first choice left-back are gone following head coach Steven Gerrard’s decision to splash the cash on Digne.

The former England international feels the 6 ft 26-year-old, who has featured 89 times for the Midlands club, will need to move onto pastures new in the summer if he wants to continue enjoying regular action.

Palmer exclusively told GIVEMESPORT: “I think he’s done but I think he’s been unlucky. I think he’s played well whenever I’ve seen him play for Aston Villa, but Steven Gerrard wants to play a different way.
