Aston Villa transfer news: Gerrard 'looking for top-class signing', £22.5m ace fits the bill

Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse has tipped Aston Villa to reignite their interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and seek to seal a deal when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne, Robin Olsen and Calum Chambers joined the Midlands club last month but head coach Steven Gerrard failed in his pursuit of Gomez.

Gomez was heavily linked with a move to Villa last month but a switch failed to materialise after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp opted to reject all advances as the deadline loomed.

The development came after it had initially been reported the Midlands club had not given up hope of securing the 11-cap England international’s services having registered their interest during the early stages of the window.

But the disappointment is unlikely to end Villa’s interest in Gomez as Gerrard, who was appointed as the club’s head coach in November, is known to be a ‘huge admirer’ of the central defender.

Gomez has been offered a limited amount of Premier League action since the campaign got underway and, having missed out on a January transfer, Klopp has urged the 24-year-old to seize his chance to impress at Anfield.

The former Charlton Athletic star, who is valued at £22.5million by Transfermarkt, has entered the final two-and-a-half years of his £85,000-per-week contract at Liverpool.

Collomosse has refused to rule out the possibility of Gomez joining Villa by the end of the summer transfer window.
