Aston Villa may have solved Steven Gerrard's biggest selection headache

Aston Villa decided against investing upwards of £40million into Brighton's Yves Bissouma, and many fans of the club are now feeling like the squad has been left short in this area once again.

Villa have been without Marvelous Nakamba for some time now and in his absence, Douglas Luiz has been operating as the holding midfielder for the team. Given the fact he prefers to be played further up the pitch, many assumed that recruiting a genuine defensive midfielder would be in the best interest for the club.

The move didn't materialise on deadline day but Villa may have already solved the issue with a piece of business they completed prior to the deadline. The solution to Steven Gerrard's greatest selection headache at Villa could be Calum Chambers.

He is a player of an immense level of versatility, as he can play anywhere across the back four and to Villa's benefit, as a defensive midfielder. He played there 21 times whilst on loan at Fulham in 2018/19 and it wasn't till he switched to the midfield position, that he captured the hearts of Fulham fans.

He was the club's "overwhelming winner of Player of the Season " and won a total of 48.4% of the votes, more than triple of any other player. He ranked first amongst his squad for interceptions, second in tackles, third for dribbles, aerial duels and finally passes.

When comparing Chambers to other Premier League midfielders in the 2018/19 season, it is very clear to see both his limitations and his strengths. He ranked in the bottom 30 percent for passes under pressure and pass completion, which is understandable considering he is just a makeshift defensive midfielder.
