Antony told the crucial improvement needed to help solve Manchester United issue

Manchester United legend Andy Cole says Antony needs to be hitting the target more often if he is to keep cutting in on his left foot.

The Brazilian came on in the second half against Real Madrid and fired a fierce effort just over the bar midway through his shift. The winger took up some promising positions but left some frustrated with his lack of direct impact on the game as United lost 2-0.

United fashioned a number of good chances but couldn't find the finishing touch with Scott McTominay forcing Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin into a low save in the second half. And Cole wants to see more goals from midfield, with Antony a candidate.

Cole told MUTV: “Manchester United need more goals from midfield areas and wide areas. You can't just rely on Bruno and (Marcus) Rashford. Antony has got to get more goals.

“When McTominay plays he needs to get more goals, they’ve got to come from all areas of the football pitch. You can’t rely on one individual to get 25-30 goals.

“United were one of the lowest goal scorers last season (in the top half of the Premier League) - that’s not Manchester United. We’ve got to get more goals in the team.”

Fellow MUTV pundit Danny Webber said Antony can learn from Alejandro Garnacho, who did force Lunin into a save after half-time.

He added: “He [Antony] didn’t hit the target, Garnacho does hit the target, he makes the ‘keeper work. Antony will always work hard for you, he picks up good areas. He’s got the ability to do that, he just needs to concentrate.”
