'Although no time spent in prison would be long enough, it was shocking to hear his jail sentence for his horrific actions'

The devastated family of a man mowed down and killed in a horrific car crash have said they feel 'disappointed' and 'let down' by the driver's 'short' jail sentence.

Dad-of-three Jonathan Langston, 52, was crossing the road following a night out with friends when Adeel Safdar ploughed into him at 'extraordinary' speed on March 17 last year. Safdar, 28, who worked in sales, had reached 93 mph shortly before the collision, on Wilbraham Road in Chorlton, south Manchester, where a 30mph speed limit is in force.

Mr Langston, an IT consultant who lived in Whalley Range, had spent the evening out with friends in Chorlton when he began walking home just after midnight. Safdar, whose friend was a front seat passenger, was caught on CCTV using a right turn only lane to overtake another vehicle near the Gita Bhavan Hindu Temple.

After accelerating past, he continued to speed up and, 100 metres before the collision, he had reached 93mph. At the point of impact, Safdar was driving at a speed of at least 83mph, Manchester Crown Court heard.

Mr Langston was hit, propelled into the air and thrown 200 to 300 metres from the crash site. He was killed instantly having suffered 'catastrophic' injuries.

Safdar did not initially stop at the scene. He drove away but returned shortly after, when his friend called Safdar's cousin. He later told police: "It's the worst thing I could ever do, I have caused death."

Safdar, of Railway Road, Stretford, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, and was sentenced on Wednesday (January 17) to eight years behind bars. He was told he will serve two-thirds of his sentence in prison; about five years and four months
