Alex McCarthy 'considered' for Celtic transfer as champions face competition from Premier League giants

Alex McCarthy is reportedly being considered for a Celtic summer transfer switch.

The Southampton keeper is out of contract at the end of the season, which could yet end with promotion to the Premier League as Saints battle West Brom for a place in the playoff final against either Norwich City or Leeds. McCarthy has regained his place in Russell Martin's starting XI after an injury to No. 1 Gavin Bazunu and his end of season form has been good.

And McCarthy is on Celtic's radar, according to the Daily Mail. Brendan Rodgers needs a new first choice with Joe Hart set to retire. The former Man City star will hang up his gloves following the Scottish Cup Final showdown with Rangers at Hampden on May 25. Rodgers' preference for a keeper that can use the ball at his feet means he's been a long-time admirer of McCarthy and has been keen to sign him previously in his career.

However, the Hoops cold face competition from English big guns Liverpool and Newcastle. Both are on the lookout for keepers and McCarthy's status as a free agent will appeal, especially given the Toon's much publicised need to keep the books balanced to comply with Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).

However, McCarthy would be seen as a backup at both St James' Park and Anfield. Fit again Nick Pope is Eddie Howe's established No 1, while Alisson Becker is the main man for the Reds. Caoimhin Kelleher is second choice, but the Irishman may move on this summer in search of a regular start. He has been linked with Celtic, but Liverpool's price tag is likely to be too rich for the Scottish champions.
