Airdrie were always confident of goals against Arbroath, says goal ace

Arron Lyall’s first senior goal put Airdrie on their way to a 5-2 win over Arbroath on Saturday, and says they were always confident of goals.

Lyall struck in 37 minutes, cancelling out Ryan Dow’s opener, and Adam Frizzel struck the bar with a shot, before playing an inch-perfect ball for Liam McStravick to slot into the net for a 2-1 interval lead.

Mason Hancock glanced in Frizzell’s corner two minutes after the interval, with David Gold pulling another goal back for the visitors.

However, Charlie Telfer tucked the ball into the net on the rebound after Max Boruc had brilliantly saved Nikolay Todorov’s header in 69 minutes.

And the Diamonds put the seal on the win eight minutes later when Craig Watson headed in Telfer’s corner.

Former Rangers kid Lyall said: “It’s my first goal for the club and my first in senior football, so I’m very delighted with that.

“When I scored was important, and we went and got the second just before half-time, so taking that into half-time we were pleased with that.

“I thought we started very slow and lost the first goal, but I thought we reacted very well to go and get the equaliser and the second.

“Coming in at half-time we just knew that if we pushed on and started playing the way we know we can, we’d go on and win the game.

“It was a powerful win and it was brilliant.

“To put that many goals past a team is always good for the confidence, but we work on it all week, loads of movement off the ball, loads of runs, and we knew we were going to get chances. We did that.”

The win, and Morton’s defeat at Partick Thistle, moved Airdrie into the fourth-placed play-off slot in the Championship ahead of Sunday’s SPFL Trust Trophy final against TNS at the Falkirk Stadium.
