Aberdeen PREFER beating Rangers over Celtic as former Pittodrie and Ibrox star echoes Kris Boyd

Kris Boyd claimed Aberdeen would up their game against Rangers when they come to town, and one former star of both clubs agrees.

The Sky Sports pundit's rant came after rivals Celtic mauled Barry Robson's men 6-0 at Parkhead, with Boyd blasting across the TV screens with his view that it would be a far different Aberdeen that shows up against Philippe Clement's men. The Dons had come off a draining draw with PAOK in Greece while Brendan Rodgers' men suffered a rough one of their own in the Champions League days prior. And while both sets of players in both camps have stayed neutral on the notion, former Pittodrie defender Richard Foster reckons there's something in his ex-Rangers team-mate's claim.

He reckons the long history between the Dons and the Light Blues plays in to fans of Robson's men feeling up for it more than ever when Rangers are the opponents And despite the Pittodrie coach and his adversary Clement both downplaying any extra motivation, Foster revealed the inside look in to both dressing rooms when the classic fixture comes around.

He told Mail Online: "It’s massive. Everyone always said that Aberdeen always lift their game against Rangers. You go, well, look at the fans.

"It’s just all the things that go with it. The fact Aberdeen were so successful in the 80s, obviously the tackle between Neil Simpson and Ian Durrant.

"If you were to go, 'Okay, what would you, the team and the fans rather?' Beating Celtic or Rangers at Pittodrie?' Most of them would choose beating Rangers. That filtered into the squad as well.

"Football fans love a rivalry. They like to cling onto it."
