Philippe Clement names two Rangers transfer steps key to landing top stars amid fishing away from the elite

When it comes to spending Rangers’ transfer kitty, Philippe Clement is a believer that size doesn’t necessarily matter. What does is identifying the latest young talent and making your move quick enough before the rest of the market gets excited. That’s an area where Gers haven’t measured up in recent years. They’ve wasted millions on players who failed to prove a turn-on for the Ibrox support.

But with new recruitment chief Nils Koppen set to come on board just after New Year following a switch from Dutch giants PSV, new gaffer Clement hopes it won’t be long before the Light Blues will be boasting a squad well enough endowed to go the distance in the chase for titles. He said: “It is not about the amount (of money), it is about the quality. In the end it is not about how much you spend. Of course, the more you spend the more chance you have to go in a bigger pool of players.

“You have more chances to find the right ones but it needs to be the right ones. This is why we made an important step bringing Nils in. We had a lot of talks with different people, myself and the board. We are convinced he’s the right man at the right place.

“He has a good track record in PSV bringing players in who are not too expensive. That’s a reality in this club, we are not the one with the most money in the world and can buy whoever that we want.

“We are fishing in not the best pool but we need to get the best fish out of that and as fast as possible. Nils is the right guy to guide that process. There are several good people already inside of the club to help in that way but with what Nils did at PSV, we all think he can be a really important asset.”
