5 Rangers vs Aberdeen ref decisions in focus from 'fortunate' Graeme Shinnie elbow let off to Hampden rammy

VAR was the busiest of bodies during the Viaplay Cup final with referee Don Robertson coming under heavy fire from pundits on more than a few calls.

Rangers sealed their first piece of silverware of the season, with Philippe Clement picking up his first trophy since arriving at Ibrox two months ago, while a decade-plus hoodoo in the League Cup was ended thanks to captain James Tavernier's late strike. And despite it being 20 or so years since Aberdeen and Rangers did battle in a cup final, the two engaged in feisty battle from the get go with referee Robertson and VAR official Andrew Dallas with more than a few decisions to pore over.

The experienced whistler looked to keep a lid on the battles across the slippy Hampden park but that approach split the pundits with some slamming 'abysmal' decisions, while others felt Robertson could do no wrong by not being card happy. There were flashpoints of penalties, handballs, fouls and off the ball tussles as Record Sport took a look at some key incidents in the fiery final.

It only took a few minutes for John Lundstram to impose himself on the game, clattering in to Aberdeen's Jamie McGrath from the back. And while the midfielder would be booked later on in the half, the pundits were unanimous that he should have been cautioned earlier.

They reckon he got away with it being so early as Alan Hutton: "He's lucky not to get a yellow card because it's so early he's lucky to get away with it. Michael Stewart added: "If that tackle happens later in this game that's a yellow card, should that matter? I think that's what has swayed the referee because McGrath gets his body across, Lundstram dives in."
