3 big Rangers vs Betis VAR calls in focus from Rabbi Matondo penalty snub to the appeal for an orange card

It was a massive result for Rangers under the lights at Ibrox as they got lift off in Europe with an impressive win over Real Betis.

The Light Blues kicked-off their Europa League campaign with a precious victory over the La Liga side - that could prove to be a turning point in the campaign. With pressure mounting on Michael Beale after defeats to Celtic and PSV Eindhoven - which ended their hopes of Champions League football - Abdallah Sima got the credit for the goal after beating team-mate Ben Davies to push home midway through the second half.

But who got the final touch on the ball that flew beyond Betis goalkeeper Claudio Bravo wasn't the last talking point of the night after referee Lawrence Visser and Bram Van Driessche in the VAR room were brought into the talking points in Govan. Manuel Pellegrini was irked following the full-time whistle as he branded the result "unfair" - and could the big calls by the officials factor into his thinking?

What were the major calls from the whistler and the VAR team on the night? Record Sport takes a look.

The winger was a thorn in the side of the Real Betis backline throughout the 90 minutes. His pace left the La Liga defence trailing - but a first half flashpoint caught the attention of Derek McInnes on TNT Sports. Germán Pezzella pulled the jersey of the Welshman as he broke into the box before the ball was eventually ushered out of play. However, the Kilmarnock boss reckons the referee should have been allowed a review of the incident.

“At the time I didn’t see anything, but he has enough of his shirt to definitely impede him. Whether the referee thinks he has seen enough of it I don’t know. I think it should be reviewed by VAR and potentially be a penalty kick.”
