Pep Guardiola approach is ensuring Man City continue dominant start to the season

Step up to Manchester City at the moment and you're likely to get stepped on.

All and sundry are being blown away by Pep Guardiola's team alongside all the pre-season questions and concerns over their hunger for more success and a seemingly weaker squad. The season is six games old and all six have been won, an even better start to last year's campaign which ended with a treble triumph.

What makes it all the more impressive is the upheaval they have faced in the process. Their captain and a crucial, experienced star departed in the summer. They were only properly replaced once the season had begun. Kevin De Bruyne lasted just 20 minutes before being ruled out of action until 2024. John Stones, Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish and Mateo Kovacic have all been sidelined as well. Even when Guardiola was away for a couple of weeks as he recovered from surgery.

Most other teams would crumble amid such turbulence and disruption but City have just plodded along like it's any other week, without a care in the world. But that's not to say they have been at their best.

Though most matches have been won comfortably, City have been sloppy and flat at points. It makes the wins even better in a way and is by design.

Guardiola knows his side can't be at their most intense and scintillating this early in the campaign because they won't be able to maintain it over the next 60 games. Go too hard too quickly and you'll burn out too soon, drop off at the worst moment and let your rivals take advantage. It's all about timing when to move into that fifth gear.
