LONDON: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been handed a one-match ban after the Football Association appealed against the decision to only fine the German for his touchline tirade. Klopp was initially fined £30,000 ($35,000) by an independent regulatory commission following his rant at referee Anthony Taylor during Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Manchester City in the Premier League on October 16. The FA felt that was too lenient and an independent appeal board has now suspended the German from the touchline with immediate effect.
DUBAI: Cristiano Ronaldo will enter his fifth World Cup with a Portugal squad filled with talented players but that will be missing some national team regulars. Ronaldo will team up with Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes and João Félix, but among those not included in the list of 26 players selected by coach Fernando Santos on Thursday were João Moutinho, José Fonte and Renato Sanches. Also not going to Qatar is Liverpool’s Diogo Jota because of an injury. Others who made the squad include João Cancelo, Rúben Dias and 39-year-old central defender Pepe. Defender António Silva, who is 19 and received his first call up, also will be going to Qatar. The 37-year-old Ronaldo has been showing signs of a decline for the first time in his career but will still be the leader for a Portugal squad seeking their first World Cup title. After finally earning a major international trophy at the 2016 European Championship, Portugal also added the title of the inaugural edition of the Nations League at home in 2019. But they didn’t make it past the round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup or at Euro 2020.
Portugal manager Fernando Santos named his 26-man squad on Thursday for the World Cup in Qatar.
Erling Haaland came off the bench to score an injury-time penalty as 10-man Manchester City snatched a hard-fought 2-1 win against battling Fulham in the Premier League.
One of Portugal's best generations of players, led by Cristiano Ronaldo in the twilight of his career, will arrive at the World Cup with the pressure of proving they are not underachievers.
Haaland has missed City's past two games against Sevilla and Leicester due to a combination of a foot injury and illness. The prolific Norwegian resumed full training on Thursday and City boss Guardiola is hopeful his star forward will be fit for this weekend's match at the Etihad Stadium.
Julian Alvarez stepped into the void left by Erling Haaland with a goal and two assists as Manchester City came from behind to beat Sevilla 3-1 on Wednesday.
