Southampton will have to ‘forget’ about signing PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo if he goes to the World Cup, according to journalist Dean Jones. The Saints were one of several Premier League sides interested in signing the 23-year-old over the summer following an outstanding 2021/22 campaign for his boyhood club.
Sky Sports reported last month that Manchester United were preparing a bid for Gakpo, who is believed to be valued at around £35 million by PSV.
However, the Old Trafford outfit decided to reunite Erik ten Hag with Antony instead, bringing him in from Ajax for £86m, leaving their domestic rivals Southampton and Leeds United to battle it out for the Netherlands international.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano then disclosed on deadline day that the south coast club were behind Leeds in the race for Gakpo’s signature despite neither side having a bid accepted.
