Southampton 'have to forget' about £35m star at St Mary's

Southampton will have to ‘forget’ about signing PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo if he goes to the World Cup, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Saints were one of several Premier League sides interested in signing the 23-year-old over the summer following an outstanding 2021/22 campaign for his boyhood club.

Sky Sports reported last month that Manchester United were preparing a bid for Gakpo, who is believed to be valued at around £35 million by PSV.

However, the Old Trafford outfit decided to reunite Erik ten Hag with Antony instead, bringing him in from Ajax for £86m, leaving their domestic rivals Southampton and Leeds United to battle it out for the Netherlands international.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano then disclosed on deadline day that the south coast club were behind Leeds in the race for Gakpo’s signature despite neither side having a bid accepted.

Yet the west Yorkshire outfit ended up signing Wilfried Gnonto after their deal for Bamba Dieng collapsed in dramatic fashion, while Southampton refused to match PSV’s asking price.

Ralph Hasenhuttl did manage to snap up teenage winger Samuel Edozie from Manchester City in the final hours of the previous window, but it remains to be seen if his arrival has ended the Austrian’s interest in Gakpo.

Gakpo has started the current campaign in emphatic fashion under the guidance of his new manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.

And Jones believes that the forward’s form has been ‘unreal’ and that if he makes Louis van Gaal final squad for the upcoming World Cup, then Southampton will have to turn their attention to alternative targets.
