South Africa's Stephen Mokoka was humbled by his Sanlam Cape Town Marathon win as he defended his title on a hot and humid Sunday morning. There was a lot of expectation of the local favourite, and Mokoka did not disappoint as he crossed the finish line first in 2:09:58.With over 13 000 athletes competing in the 42.2km race and many supporters lining the route, Mokoka was greeted by a loud and enthusiastic cheer as he went on to clinch his third CT Marathon title. The Olympian walked away with R250 000 for his victory."I'm grateful, it means a lot to me, winning again and defending my title.
It's great to say that I've won the Cape Town Marathon three times now," Mokoka told reporters after his win."Today was a tough day, tough course, but we always knew that.
But I enjoyed it, especially seeing the support out there. It was an amazing experience."I hope that in the next few years, it can be an event that South Africans can tick off the box and make it a big event in Africa.
It's great to see so many people support athletics and take part in this event. Hopefully, it'll get bigger and better."Ethiopia's Deresh Kindie Kassie finished second with a time of 2:11:26 and was followed by his fellow countryman Dagnachew Adere Maru (2:11:52).Mokoka holds the Cape Town Marathon record of 2:08.31, a feat he accomplished in 2018.Despite being 1 minute and 27 seconds away from breaking his race record on Sunday, Mokoka insists that the Cape Town Marathon is more than about getting over the line than running fast."Titles remain forever, but records are meant to be broken.
