There are several reasons why Erik ten Hag is so eager to wrap up the signing of Mason Mount. The Dutchman is keen to get on with his other Manchester United transfer plans ahead of time with a striker and a goalkeeper on the mind.

But he also knows that if United dawdle then other sharks will try to nab the fish on the end of his line. Mount is keen to join United, having agreed personal terms but United are finding Todd Boehly a tougher nut to crack and have had their third bid for Mount rejected.

The Reds have tabled a package worth in the region of £55m, but are hesitant about offering any more with just 12 months left on his deal.
