There are several reasons why Erik ten Hag is so eager to wrap up the signing of Mason Mount.

The Dutchman is keen to get on with his other Manchester United transfer plans ahead of time with a striker and a goalkeeper on the mind. But he also knows that if United dawdle then other sharks will try to nab the fish on the end of his line.

Yet for all his consistency, Mount has never quite held the all-round acclaim from football onlookers. Perhaps that is the price of being an all-rounder himself.

Mount does not excel in one area specifically which makes it hard for some to pin down where he fits in, a classic midfielder in a modern catalogue. In the era of YouTube goal montages and five-second TikTok clips, Mount does not often feature.

But it’s worth listening to the old-timers who know how the fundamentals of the game work and how vital it is to keep those standards high. Roy Keane was arguably the epitome of that during his career.
