Newcastle United hope to be ‘ahead of anyone else’ in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby but they will ‘undoubtedly’ face competition, according to transfer insider Dean Jones. Eddie Howe bolstered his squad further during the summer transfer window, splashing out over £100 million on recruits, but failed to land a top target.

The 23-year-old was the subject of interest from Newcastle throughout the latest transfer period but there remained a large gap between the two clubs’ valuation of the player.

Leverkusen were reportedly demanding £55 million for the winger, whose contract expires in the summer of 2025, as they looked to hold onto their star player.

Diaby himself put reports of a transfer to bed in July when he confirmed he would be playing at the BayArena in the 2022-23 campaign.
