Meet Rakshitha Raju: India's 1500m Sensation At Paris Paralympics 2024

Rakshitha Raju, a visually impaired athlete from Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, has been selected for the Paralympics 2024. She will be competing in the Women's 1500m Running T-11 Category, making history as the first Indian female athlete to compete in this category in the Paralympic Games.

This milestone is a testament to Rakshitha's unparalleled resilience and commitment to excellence as per the release of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI).

Born with a visual impairment, Rakshitha has overcome numerous challenges to become one of India's top Para athletes. She lost her parents at a very early age and was brought up by her grandmother, who is affected by a speech and hearing impairment.

Her passion for athletics ignited during her school days at the Ashakirana School for the Blind, under the guidance of her physical education teacher.

Braving all odds with a steely resolve, India's Simran won the bronze medal in the women's 200m T12 final at the Paralympic Games in Paris on Saturday. Reigning world champion Simran finished third on the podium with a personal best time of 24.75 seconds in what was a culmination of a journey that was fraught with obstacles right from the day she was born. The T12 classification in the Paralympics is for athletes with visual impairments.

The country has already hit its best medal tally in the history of the Para Games. India won a total of 26 medals; 6 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze. High jumper Praveen Kumar, shooter Avani Lekhara, javelin thrower Sumit Antil, archer Harvinder Singh, badminton star Nitesh Kumar and club thrower Dharambir Nain are the stars who bagged the top honour for India. Tokyo silver medalist Praveen Kumar broke the Asian record to claim the gold medal in the men's high jump T64 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Friday. It was a stunning effort from the 21-year-old para-athlete as he produced a season best jump of 2.08m in the final to finish ahead of USA's Derek Loccident (2.06m) and Uzbekistan's Temurbek Giyazov (2.03m). This was India's sixth gold medal at the Paris Paralympics - the highest ever in a single edition of the competition. Earlier, India's best tally came in the Tokyo Paralympics where the contingent ended up winning five gold medals.
India's Schedule At Paris Paralympics 2024, September 6: India's charge towards the 30-medal mark at the Paralympics 2024 is going strong. Friday all eyes will be on athletics with several medals on offer.  Dipesh Kumar (Men's Javelin Throw F54 Final), Praveen Kumar (Men's High Jump T64 Final), Bhavanaben Ajabaji Chaudhary (Women's Javelin Throw F46 Final), Soman Rana and Hokato Hotozhe Sema (Men's Shot Put F57 Final) will be eyeing medals. In para-powerlifting, Kasthuri Rajamani will be in action in women's 67kg final.
