Manchester United have been held to a goalless draw by Newcastle United. In a match of few talking points, United were left frustrated by some bewildering officiating but can only have themselves to blame for a lacklustre display and more blunt attacking play.

Erik ten Hag's side were unlucky not to have a penalty after Jadon Sancho was tripped in the box and Cristiano Ronaldo twice had the ball in the net but saw his goals disallowed.

Newcastle were the better team in the opening 45 minutes, with Joelinton hitting the bar and post, but United improved in the second half, with the introduction of Marcus Rashford adding some impetus.

The forward rounded the keeper but mistakenly teed up Fred, instead of shooting himself, and the Brazilian predictably missed the open target.
