Manchester United vs Newcastle LIVE highlights and reaction as Ronaldo scores but offside

Manchester United have been held to a goalless draw by Newcastle United.

In a match of few talking points, United were left frustrated by some bewildering officiating but can only have themselves to blame for a lacklustre display and more blunt attacking play.

Erik ten Hag's side were unlucky not to have a penalty after Jadon Sancho was tripped in the box and Cristiano Ronaldo twice had the ball in the net but saw his goals disallowed.

Newcastle were the better team in the opening 45 minutes, with Joelinton hitting the bar and post, but United improved in the second half, with the introduction of Marcus Rashford adding some impetus.

The forward rounded the keeper but mistakenly teed up Fred, instead of shooting himself, and the Brazilian predictably missed the open target. Rashford had another chance to win the game at the death but could only head wide.

Sir Alex Ferguson was pitchside again at kick-off and had he returned at full-time no amount of injury time could have elicited a winner from Manchester United.

One fan trundled down the gangways in the 77th minute and muttered bitterly at the Newcastle analysts. Newcastle's obdurate approach had got to United supporters, as well as the players, three of whom were cautioned.

The unreliable referee Craig Pawson irked the crowd almost as much as some of United's underperformers. There were boos at the final shrill, the loudest reserved for Pawson, though he was not the cause of another blunt United performance.
