Manchester United icon David Beckham has thanked the Lionesses for inspiring the next generation after their heartbreaking World Cup final loss to Spain on Sunday.

England went into the match marginal favourites having beaten their opponents in the European Championships last year. But, the challenge in Sydney proved a step too far.

Olga Carmona scored the winning goal just before the half hour mark thanks to a low drive beyond the reach of United's Mary Earps.

The eventual Golden Glove winner kept her side in the tie with 20 minutes remaining as she saved Jennifer Hermoso's spot kick.
