Sir Jim Ratcliffe is trying to show that he is an owner that backs up his word, as Manchester United indeed spy a “Wembley of the North”.

The hope is that plans for a 100,000-seater stadium will be submitted before the end of the year with the new co-owner ordering his recently-established regeneration taskforce to draw up proposals by December.

Early estimates from today’s market rates suggest that such a seismic move will cost more than £2 billion, yet it is viewed as a more cost-effective project than a revamp of the current ground, of which some sections have fallen into disrepair.

Not every supporter is fond of the idea of a new build, with some fearing a loss of tradition and historicity in a fresh modern stadium.
