Liverpool have suffered an ‘alarming’ downturn in form and the Anfield club’s midfield has become a ‘weakness’, according to journalist Dean Jones. The Reds may have smashed their transfer record by signing Darwin Nunez for £85million in the summer, but they have made an underwhelming start to the season and matters got worse at Napoli on Wednesday.

Liverpool got their Champions League campaign off to a woeful start as they suffered a 4-1 group stage defeat to Napoli. The Merseyside giants’ boss Jurgen Klopp admitted he saw ‘obvious’ problems with his side’s performance in Italy and that he may have to ‘reinvent’ the squad.

Left-back Andy Robertson was also scathing when it came to analysing Liverpool’s display, claiming he and his team-mates ‘weren’t compact enough’.

Trent Alexander-Arnold came in for criticism from BT Sport pundits Robbie Fowler and Rio Ferdinand, with the former questioning the England international’s ‘desire’ after the thrashing.
