James McGarry is looking to soar with Aberdeen in the second half of the season – so he can hit the skies again for international duty.

The defender has just one cap for New Zealand – against Lithuania in 2019. While he was due for a recall for games against DR Congo and Australia last October, the left wing-back was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Now McGarry is determined to help lift Dons back up the table and into the fight for third place. And he knows that would boost his hopes of a recall by the All Whites, who have confirmed they will play a tournament with Croatia, Tunisia and Egypt in the United Arab Emirates in March.

He said: “Hopefully I will get into the national team again at some point. I just have to keep playing and playing well to get into that squad.

Nottingham Forest and Everton shrugged off the threat of a potential Premier League points deduction as they battled into the FA Cup fourth round on Wednesday. Forest survived a scare to beat third-tier Blackpool 3-2 after extra-time, while Everton were 1-0 winners against Crystal Palace in another of the night's third-round replays. It was a welcome tonic for Forest and Everton, who were both referred to an independent commission by the Premier League on Monday after admitting to breaches of financial rules.
