Indian Shooters Nihal Singh, Amir Ahmad Bhat Fail To Clear Qualification Round In Paralympics 2024

Indian shooters Nihal Singh and Amir Ahmad Bhat could not make the final of the mixed 25m pistol (SH1) competition at the Paralympics here on Monday, finishing 10th and 11th respectively in the qualifications.

The two Indians showed consistency when they turned up for the qualification round in the first session. Nihal was placed fourth with a score of 287 at the end of the precision stage, while Amir was holding the eighth and final qualifying spot with 286.

In the rapid stage however, both Nihal and Amir could only manage 282 for aggregate scores of 569 and 568 respectively, which were not good enough for them to clear the qualification.

The top eight shooters from the qualification progress to the final. Athletes classified in SH1 are able to hold their gun without difficulty and shoot from a standing or sitting position (in a wheelchair or chair).

Simran had earlier topped her heat and entered the semifinals with a timing of 25.41s. Simran was in the same heat as Germany's Katrin Mueller-Rottgardt, who had pipped her to bronze on Thursday night in the 100m final. The Indian, who became world champion this year in Kobe, was born prematurely with visual impairment and faced numerous challenges throughout her life, including her father's chronic illness and eventual passing.

Tokyo silver medalist Praveen Kumar broke the Asian record to claim the gold medal in the men's high jump T64 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Friday. It was a stunning effort from the 21-year-old para-athlete as he produced a season best jump of 2.08m in the final to finish ahead of USA's Derek Loccident (2.06m) and Uzbekistan's Temurbek Giyazov (2.03m). This was India's sixth gold medal at the Paris Paralympics - the highest ever in a single edition of the competition. Earlier, India's best tally came in the Tokyo Paralympics where the contingent ended up winning five gold medals.
