The IPL 2025 mega auction retention rules were announced by the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council on Sunday. Alongside the rule that IPL franchises can retain upto a maximum of six players including one uncapped player, there was a twist.

An old law - that had been there since 2008 but removed in 2022 - was reinstated ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. This is the law that allows Indian players who haven't played an international game in more than five years to be retained as 'uncapped player'.

IPL franchises have to retain a minimum of one uncapped player, at Rs 4 crore, if they choose to keep all six retentions. The Governing Council's new law opens up the door for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to retain legendary India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for a small amount. "A capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant Season is held, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI.

This will be applicable for Indian Players only," the BCCI said in a release. However, Dhoni isn't the only player who can be retained in this way.

The GMR Group, recently named the new owner of Hampshire, and Avram Glazer, co-owner of Manchester United Football Club, also submitted bids before the ECB's October 18 deadline for potential investors, reported ESPNCricinfo. The ECB has invited bids for a 49 per cent stake in each of the eight franchises, with the board retaining majority control.
In times when fans expect rivalries between players within the teams to be the No. 1 retained player, Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins has reportedly shown his selfless side for the betterment of the team. As per reports, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have identified Heinrich Klaasen as their primary retention ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction, with Pat Cummins and Abhishek Sharma being the other two retentions. Though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has allowed franchises to retain a maximum of 6 players, SRH are said to be keen on going into the auction with just three retentions.
There is a high probability that wicketkeeper-batters KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel will enter the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction pool, scheduled for later this year. Currently, the deadline for all teams to complete their retentions before the mega auction is October 31. Each franchise can retain a maximum of six players via a combination of retention and the RTM option. The six retentions or RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (a combination of Indian and overseas players) and a maximum of two uncapped players.
All 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) are set to finalise their list of player retentions. Reports have claimed that October 31st is the last day to submit the players retention list, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to host the IPL mega auction in the last week of November. However, the BCCI is yet to make a formal announcement, as far as the date and venue are concerned.
A new dynamic of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions has been revealed. As per reports in ESPN Cricinfo and Cricbuzz suggest that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are set to retain South African wicket-keeper batter Heinrich Klaasen for Rs 23 crore. That amount would be Rs 5 cr more than the Rs 18 cr slab set by the IPL Governing Council for the first retention slot. The amount division suggests that a franchise can retain players for more or less than the designated slab, as long as the total amount of that many players is equal or within the designated Rs 75 crore retained purse.
