Australia Coach Calls Mohammed Shami's Absence "Big Loss" For India In Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has acknowledged that Mohammed Shami's absence is a big loss for India, but added his team won't take the pacers who replace him lightly during the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy series starting on November 22 in Perth, citing the Gabba Test win of the visitors' in 2021.

Shami has been out of action since last year's ODI World Cup in India due to an achilles injury which needed surgery this year.

But there's a possibility that Shami might join the Indian team for the second half of the Australia tour provided he proves his fitness and readiness in Bengal's last two Ranji Trophy matches at Bengaluru and Indore respectively.

India has won Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia the last two times it was played here in 2018/19 and 2020/21 respectively. "Mohammed Shami is a big loss.

In red-hot form, Australian white-ball wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis is "in the mix" to make his Test debut as a specialist batter in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy next month, hinted chief selector George Bailey on Monday. India, unbeaten in the marquee series on the previous four occasions, will face Australia in a five-Test series beginning in Perth on November 21. "There's no doubt that the form is really fantastic at the moment... the ability to jump back into domestic cricket and dominate has been fantastic," Bailey told reporters.
Delhi pacer Harshit Rana, who earned a call-up to the Indian Test side for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia away from home, said that being selected for the tour is a big deal for him since the competitive attitude he has in his gameplay is very similar to that of the Aussies. Rana was among several fresh faces chosen for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, alongside young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, opener Abhimanyu Easwaran and wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel.
Indian cricket team fast bowler Mohammed Shami took to social media to react to not getting selected for the upcoming Test series against Australia. Shami has been missing in action since the ODI World Cup 2023 final after suffering an ankle injury in November. The pacer underwent surgery and completed his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) before his return was derailed by swelling in his knees. While Shami recently said that he has no pain in his knees anymore, the selectors decided to not include him for the much-anticipated series.
India's qualification for the World Test Championship final in June next year is hanging in balance and even if they make the grade for the third consecutive time, it will be a massive surprise if skipper Rohit Sharma stays available for the next two-year WTC cycle. Ditto for Ravichandran Ashwin, who will be 41 by then. Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli, the two supremely fit men, will be 39. The embarrassing Test series defeat at home against New Zealand has already triggered a debate around the effectiveness of a few seniors. Ravi Shastri could only empathize with Gambhir. "New Zealand have beaten them (India) handsomely in both the Test matches. It's food for thought (on series loss). He (Gambhir) has just taken over the job. It's never easy being coach of a team that has such a big following," Shastri said while commentating during the second Test in Pune.
There was no place in the squad for pacer Mohammed Shami as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Team India's squad for the upcoming Test tour of Australia. With the series comprising of five-matches, stretching between November 2024 and January 2025, the BCCI named a strong 18-man squad, in addition to three travelling reserves. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and pacer Harshit Rana received maiden call-ups. India captain Rohit Sharma is expected to miss one of the first two Tests due to personal reasons.
Harshit Rana celebrated his maiden Test team call-up by rattling Assam with a fiery opening spell but keeper-batter Sumit Ghadigaonkar's unbeaten 120 took the visitors to a respectable 264 for 6 at stumps on the opening day of a group D Ranji Trophy match. The fifth wicket stand between right-hander Ghadigaonkar and seasoned Sib Shankar Roy (59) yielded 164 runs before Rana (4/62 in 15 overs) came for his final spell to break the stand but Delhi were guilty of extremely slow over-rate with 76 overs being sent during the day.
