Moises Caicedo £111million Chelsea & Liverpool tug of war a transfer reminder for Manchester United

Manchester United won't be too worried about missing out on Moises Caicedo at the £111million fee Liverpool and Chelsea have offered, but the British transfer record deal is a reminder of what the Reds could have had.

In 2021, United had the opportunity to bring the Columbian defensive midfielder to Old Trafford for just £4.5m. Instead, the Reds chose to walk away citing a messy deal and Brighton and Hove Albion swooped in.

Fastforward less than two years and Liverpool and Chelsea are battling it out for his services and prepared to pay big money. Perhaps nobody could have expected Caicedo to be as successful in the Premier League as he has proven to be, but the decision not to pursue him is a costly one. As we speak, United are trying to identify a long-term replacement for Casemiro.

The Brazilian was a revelation last season for Erik ten Hag with his performances being a big factor in their rise up the Premier League table. However, he is now 31 and may only have another two or three years at the top of his game.

United are now seeking to futureproof the squad and secure an adequate replacement. Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat is one option but the Reds are having to battle with other clubs, the latest being Juventus, for his signature. Caicedo could have been the answer, he even declared in 2020 that it was his dream to follow in the footsteps of Antonio Valencia and move to Old Trafford.

The transfer window is in full swing and United have got their hands on three players well in advance of the September 1 deadline,
