Zander Diamond hails St Patrick's young guns as they make their mark

Zander Diamond admits St Patrick’s young guns are making a name for themselves, but stressed that nothing is won yet.

And former Aberdeen star Zander, a coach at the Dumbarton side, admits he’s delighted with how a youthful Saints squad is performing - after a tricky start to the season.

Zander told the Lennox: “After the first few weeks we were left scratching our heads. But we started getting momentum, first with the cup tie against Castlemilk. That was the winners of the two leagues and we went there and put a marker down.

“We knew they would be a real challenge to us. And that sparked us into a bit of form.

“We’re a young team who are still learning the game and learning our methods.

“In pre-season we thought we might’ve got through that, but there were a few teething problems.

“After that we came into our own.

“Some of the quality in our passages of play has been excellent. That’s when you start seeing the good work in training coming off.

“The league table makes pretty reading for us, but we won’t relent as a coaching team. We put demands on the players week in, week out.”

Youngsters have formed the spine of Saints’ team this season; with defender Michael Aitken and attackers Brandon Carmouche and Lewis Lobban making themselves fixtures in the starting 11.

Zander continued: “The squad is excellent. We said at the beginning of the season that our remit was to improve the depth.

“We’re on a journey. And there will be injuries, suspensions and so on. The team that starts the season will certainly not be the one that finishes it.

“We’ve brought quality in and increased our depth.
