Xabi Alonso to Liverpool state of play as Bayern Munich links addressed by Bayer Leverkusen boss

Xabi Alonso admits there's "nothing new to say" about rumours linking him with Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

The Bayer Leverkusen boss has been talked about a lot as the next Reds manager after Jurgen Klopp said he would leave when the season ends. But now Bundesliga rivals Bayern are said to be keen on his services. On Wednesday, it came out that Thomas Tuchel, who manages the current German champions, will go away after this season ends. This made people look more at Alonso.

The Leverkusen gaffer used to play for both Liverpool and Bayern and is flying in his current job. His side are top of the Bundesliga by eight points and are yet to taste defeat this season it the league. They are also in the hunt for Europa League success as they get set to learn their last 16 fate on Friday while they are also in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Alonso shut down any talk over his future.

"Maybe you have some questions about my future, but I'm sorry, I have nothing new to say. I wanted to say that beforehand," he said at a press conference, reported by Bild.

"Right now I'm the [Leverkusen] coach. That's for sure. I have nothing new to say for the future. We will see. It's normal that there are questions, but it's off topic now. Now is not the time for me to talk much about it."

Asked about Bayern Munich's interest after Thomas Tuchel became their coach, Alonso said: "I understand the question, but I have to say again that I have nothing new to say. It's just hypothetical." He also said this week was like any other for his team and he's planning to stay with Leverkusen because his contract goes until 2026.
