Xabi Alonso has already made decision on Liverpool return as Bayern Munich eye former Reds star

Liverpool have been warned that they could miss out on Xabi Alonso as their new manager if Bayern Munich decide to approach the former Reds midfielder.

Alonso has turned Bayer Leverkusen's fortunes around since he took over in October 2022, taking them from second from bottom in the Bundesliga into strong contention for a sensational treble. Leverkusen, who have never won the Bundesliga before, are currently 10 points ahead of rivals Bayern with 10 games left. They're also unbeaten this season and have made it to the DFB-Pokal semi-finals and the Europa League round-of-16.

Both Liverpool and Bayern are looking for new managers this summer, as Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel are stepping down. This has led to speculation that Alonso could return to either of his former clubs. Didi Hamann, who played with Alonso at Liverpool, thinks his old teammate is the best choice to replace Klopp. But he's warned Liverpool that Alonso might not be able to resist the pull of Bayern, reports the Liverpool Echo.

"He took over at Leverkusen last year and the team were second or third from bottom and he's transformed the whole football club," said Hamann, speaking to BoyleSports. "Yes, they bought two or three players in the summer. Xhaka was a brilliant signing, but it's pretty much the same team. He galvanised all of them."

"They are still unbeaten with only two draws, 10 points clear of Bayern and they will win the title this season. I don't think you need to be a scientist to forecast that. And he's probably the ideal candidate because he knows how Liverpool work."
