Wout Weghorst transfer latest amid Rangers rumours as Burnley striker on the move again

Turkish side Trabzonspor have declared their interest in signing Burnley striker Wout Weghorst – as rumours swirl the Dutchman could be a shock strike target for Rangers.

The 6ft 5in 31-year-old frontman has just one year left on the contract he signed to move to Turf Moor in a £12million deal from German side Wolfsburg in 2022. And the Clarets are expected to cash in on the Netherlands international star rather than risk losing him for free next year.

Weghorst’s name has been sweeping social media in connection with a move to Ibrox as Philippe Clement looks to bolster his attacking options while fed-up fans’ patience runs out with Cyriel Dessers. Record Sport exclusively revealed Hearts marksman Lawrence Shankland is on the Light Blues radar as they look to strengthen ahead of a Champions League tilt and Scottish Premiership title challenge.

Trabzonspor are tooling up for the season ahead and have already signed ex Rangers duo Borna Barisic and John Lundstram while Light Blues captain James Tavernier is also interesting the Super Lig side. The Turkish club’s boss Abdullah Avci admitted Weghorst, who was on loan at Manchester United in 2023, is seen as the man who can fill the boots of last season’s loan striker Paul Onuachu, who had an unhappy spell from Southampton.

Avci said: “We did not get enough of Onuachu last season. He first went to the African Cup with the Nigerian national team, then suffered an injury. I don’t want to face the same problems again, that’s why Weghorst is a name that suits us better. If we finalise his transfer, it will be an important development for us.”
