Coventry City continued to create more headlines and history for the club by chalking up their third ground at which to play a competitive first team ‘home’ game.

Having spent a season at Northampton Town’s Sixfield Stadium in 2013/14 and two at Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s in 2019/20 and 2020/21, the Sky Blues played what is hoped to be a one-off fixture at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, entertaining Championship rivals Bristol City in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The neutral venue, however, didn’t create any lasting memories as Mark Robins’ men suffered a first half calamity, letting in three goals inside the opening 30 minutes before Jamie Allen sparked second half fight-back with a stunning reply on the hour. But it was all too little too late for City who went on to concede a fourth in stoppage time to complete their comprehensive exit from this year’s Carabao Cup.

Here are some of the big talking points from the 4-1 defeat.

For the second game running the Sky Blues put in a sluggish first half showing, and one can only hope it’s not the start of a worrying trend. City were hugely disappointing for the first 45 minutes against Sunderland on the opening day of the new season and, again, poor against the Robins in the EFL Cup.

The team managed to salvage a point at the Stadium of Light but were dumped out of the Carabao Cup, albeit with a weakened team, when they were out-played by Nigel Pearson’s men until after the break when there was a significant improvement.
