World media reacts to Rangers 'cauldron' as Servette escape with Ibrox defeat that 'feels like a win'

It’s advantage Rangers after a 2-1 win over Servette at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

Taking a lead to Switzerland would have been acceptable to Michael Beale and his men prior to kick-off in their Champions League third round qualifier. But given how they started the game, there’s a feeling that they could and probably should have made things more comfortable for themselves. James Tavernier gave them a sixth minute lead from the penalty spot, and it looked like being a straightforward night when Cyriel Dessers kneed in his first goal for the club after just quarter-of-an-hour.

But if the visitor’s penalty shoot-out win over Genk in the last round taught Rangers anything, it’s that Rene Weiler’s side are never out of it. They played with ten men for 115 minutes in Belgium and twice pegged back their opponents. Dessers gave them a helping hand in Glasgow when he palmed a fairly tame cross into the area, and Chris Bedia halved the deficit from the spot before 45 minutes were up.

Gers had chances to restore their two-goal cushion after the break, but didn't take them. David Douline's sending off for a second yellow just before the hour didn’t really have the impact on the game that the Ibrox crowd hoped for, and there’s work to do in Geneva next week.
