World Athletics yet to clear Tobi Amusan

World Athletics has dismissed reports in the Nigerian media that reigning World 100m hurdles champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan, has been given the all-clear to defend her title at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary next week.

Nicole Jeffery, World Athletics’ Head of Communications, made this clarification in an e-mail message to journalists, who have been accredited to cover the 19th Championships, which starts this weekend.

“Please be advised – reports appearing in Nigeria that say Tobi Amusan has been cleared to compete in Budapest are wrong.

“No decision has been made in this case yet. When a decision is made, it will be announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit,” wrote Jeffery in the message.

The Guardian recalls that World Athletics included the 26-year-old Nigerian’s name in the entry list for the Budapest Championships published last week, but with a proviso that her participation would depend on the outcome of the whereabouts failure charge preferred against her by the AIU.

The AIU says a decision regarding the matter will be made before the start of the World Championships on August 19.
