But despite the fact their victory may have brought women’s football to the forefront, female footballers are still not on an equal playing field to their male counterparts.

England Lionesses captain Leah Williamson reportedly earned £200,000 last season. While this sounds a lot compared to the average UK salary, it is a mere fraction of England Captain Harry Kane’s wages. In a year, Williamson earns the same amount Kane cashes in during just one week, the BBC reports.

And the male captain isn’t even the highest paid Premier League footballer. That would be none other than Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, who pockets a whopping £400,000 a week. Following the historic win against Germany on Sunday, campaigners have called on the FA to close the gender pay gap in football.
