Luton Town 1-0 Cardiff City: Six-game unbeaten run ends as Brown header downs flat Bluebirds
Cardiff City's six-game unbeaten run came to an end after Jacob Brown netted the only goal in a 1-0 win for Luton Town.
The Bluebirds' resurgence under Omer Riza has been temporarily halted following a marvellous comeback win over Norwich City at the weekend kept the momentum going. But in truth it looked a tired performance from Cardiff with very few chances of any note and a disjointed effort in attack.
There was little quality on both sides, all things considered, and the teams were separated by just a solitary goal courtesy of a set piece, when Brown thundered home a header from a corner just before the hour mark. And Luton were probably good value for the win.
It was almost a perfect start for Cardiff. They earned a corner with their first attack and David Turnbull's whipped cross was met by Anwar El Ghazi at the near post. The Dutchman made solid contact but watched as the ball flashed inches wide of the far post.
It was a topsy-turvy opening and Luton had their chances, too, the most notable of the early exchanges saw Jacob Brown swivel and shoot from 20 yards out, but his deflected effort was gathered comfortably by Jak Alnwick.
The visitors then took control of the tie for a period, but there were some real inaccuracies and a real lack of execution in the Bluebirds' attacks which saw them break down. Ollie Tanner and El Ghazi both struggled when they got into the danger zones, while Callum Robinson was seen drifting far too deep and the hosts had doubled and tripled up on City dangerman Rubin Colwill.
After Luton had weathered a bit of Cardiff dominance it was Riza's side which had to soak up the pressure leading into the break. Carlton Morris had a gilt-edged chance to take the lead after meeting Amari'i Bell's
