Woman banned from driving after tragic pensioner hit while crossing the road

A woman has been banned from driving after causing the death of a 75-year-old pedestrian. Patricia Dermody was hit by a car driven by Julie Parkin, from Saddleworth.

Court documents said that 58-year-old Parkin caused the Ms Dermody's death by driving a Mercedes CLK 'without due care and attention' on December 18, 2021. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Parkin had been stopped at a red traffic light on Wellington Road in Ashton, Tameside.

She pulled off after the lights changed, but hit Ms Dermody as she was still crossing the road, the CPS said. Ms Dermody sadly died 10 days later, on December 28, 2021.

An inquest opening in January 2022 heard that Ms Dermody died due to pneumonia in Salford Royal Hospital, where she had been admitted due to a 'road traffic collision'. Greater Manchester Police said the driver had assisted officers with their enquiries.

Parkin, of Kinders Crescent, Greenfield, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving at Tameside Magistrates' Court last December 21. She appeared in front of magistrates yesterday (February 13) for sentencing.

The bench sentenced her to six months' custody, suspended for 24 months, with 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days. She was also disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £128, plus costs of £85.

PC Lee Gandy, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said at the time of the collision: "This is a devastating incident in which a woman has sadly died. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends at this incredibly difficult time."
