Dan Ashworth has already exposed the Glazers at Manchester United

If Manchester United could complete a deal to bring Dan Ashworth to the club, it would be the biggest coup from the Reds since Sir Jim Ratcliffe's first in January.

Since 2019 specifically, Ashworth has built a reputation in the top flight for helping clubs bring in the best possible talent. Incredibly, the 52-year-old has managed to produce excellent results with budgets on either end of the financial spectrum.

At Brighton and Hove Albion, the former director of development with the England national team was tasked with bringing in players for small transfer fees who could be nurtured and then sold for a big profit. Meanwhile, his task in recent years at Newcastle United has focused on bringing stars to the club which can push them towards competing with Europe's best.

While he is currently in the midst of that project at St James' Park, it is fair to say Ashworth has helped the Magpies turn a corner from where they were before his arrival. Perhaps his best work to date though has come with the deal to bring Moises Caicedo to the AMEX Stadium.

Picked up from Ecuador's Independiente, Caicedo cost just £4m and managed to settle into European football almost immediately. Following a half-season loan spell at Belgian club Beerschot, the young midfielder was thrust into the first-team squad where he shone.

The 22-year-old spent just one full season with the Seagulls before they managed to sell him in the summer transfer window for an extortionate £115m. Such a substantial and quick profit is practically unheard of for a player who has not come through an academy.
