Wolves, Leeds United fans and neutrals in agreement over controversial red card

Raul Jimenez’s controversial sending off was the trigger as Wolves suffered an astonishing Premier League defeat to Leeds United.

Bruno Lage’s side led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Jonny Casto Otto and Machado Trincao and looked in complete control. But the game turned on 53 minutes when Jimenez picked up his second yellow card following an innocuous-looking collision with Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who had to go off injured.

It was the break Leeds needed as they incredibly fought back to win 3-2 thanks to goals from Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Luke Ayling, who hit the winner at the start of added time. As would expect, Wolves fans were not happy with the decision, but there was agreement from neutrals and even the odd Leeds supporter too.

A Wolves fan summed up the mood, tweeting: “Never a second yellow. Great tackle from the keeper, that’s all it was. No foul.”

A Leeds supporter admitted: “Leeds fan here. Never a red card, complete 50/50 for both lads. Very harsh on Raul, any striker is gonna go for that ball.”

A West Ham fan also weighed in, saying: “As a fan of neither club, that’s not a 2nd yellow.”

Here’s a selection of other comments from social media…

Shocking decision from the ref. Never a booking.

Raul Jimenez off? Mad, it was a normal challenge. Football has gone soft.

Not in a million years is that a second yellow. You think the officiating can't get worse but the referees in this country find new lows with every passing week.

If that's two outfield players, it's Meslier who is more likely to get a red for making a reckless challenge. The GK is the one out of control.
