Willie Limond tribute paid as Cambuslang Rangers boss laments passing of a close friend
Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl has paid tribute to tragic boxer Willie Limond, who was a close friend and a backer of the club.
The 45-year old former British and Commonwealth champion passed away at 3am on Monday morning, having fallen ill 10 days prior, in preparation for a fight.
Limond, who was from Garthamlock, had a gym in Cambuslang, and got to know McColl through that.
A footballer originally, who played for Albion Rovers, Limond won 42 of his 48 professional fights from 1999 to 2023.
An emotional McColl, said: “Willie was a friend of mine and the club, and he helped us out at a few player of the year dances and gave out awards and things.
“All these other guys would maybe charge you for stuff like that, but Willie did it to help me.
“It’s a really sad day for me and for Willie and his family.
“He’s a friend of the club and a really good, down to earth guy.
“He was a brilliant boxer but a classy guy as well, and he will be really missed.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
